HEAVY-DUTY TOWERS FOR EAST ANGLIA INSTALLED OFFSHORE

Carl C. has designed and manufactured two heavy-duty met towers, 83m tall, for the East Anglia Offshore Windfarm Zone.

Both towers for the East Anglia Zone are 83 metres tall and weigh around 44 tonnes. They are constructed of hollow structural sections and are some of the most resilient towers manufactured by Carl C. One reason for this heavy-duty construction was to take account of the fatiguing caused by waves via the roughly 40m high monopile foundation.

The towers were assembled in Eemshaven, the Netherlands, and conveyed from there by ship to the installation site. The floating crane used for the installation was Seaway Heavy Lifting’s “Oleg Strashnov”. By contrast with many others, the crane is not a jack-up crane. This meant that special account had to be taken of the installation to ensure correct installation of the tower during wave movements. This made it necessary to redesign several sections during the production process. This installation method resulted in a conical structure at the bottom of the tower to guide the tower into place on the platform.

Carl C. has manufactured more than 25 offshore towers.
